But I'm sure you're right. Though an occassional reader, I'm pretty far from an avid follower of Leiter Report, I have to confess.Christian Munthehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03373442927438898939noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763377479629539589.post-39320998207104319932014-09-26T13:42:44.427+02:002014-09-26T13:42:44.427+02:00First let me say this: I don't approve of Leit...First let me say this: I don't approve of Leiter's behaviour and I think the Statement of Concern is a fitting reaction.

"This, for some reason that is beyond me, had Brian Leiter write and send the following:"

For some context on this see http://feministphilosophers.wordpress.com/2014/09/24/here-is-some-more-context/ comments #12 #41 #42 #43 #44 . Note also that July 2nd Catarina Dutilh Novaes at NewAPPS wrote in support of Jennings ( http://www.newappsblog.com/2014/07/in-support-of-carolyn-dicey-jennings.html ): "There have been a number of people reacting to what many perceived as Brian Leiter’s excessively personalized attack of Carolyn Dicey Jennings’s analysis, such as in Daily Nous, and this post by UBC’s Carrie Ichikawa Jenkins on guidelines for academic professional conduct (the latter is not an explicit defense of Carolyn Dicey Jennings, but the message is clear enough, I think)." That linked to the ethos post by Jenkins. Leiter has stated that he found Jenkins' post through that NewAPPS post. His impression of Jenkins' post or the intentions behind it may have been shaped by Novaes' words. How Leiter reacted was still wrong.

Two facts strike me about the inspiring ethos Jenkins posted:
(1) it was posted the day after becoming full professor - an important event in someone's professional life worthy of congratulations.
(2) Its humble tone is worthy of admiration ("When I look at these statements, formulated quite generally as they are, they sound so basic that it feels important for me to note that there have been occasions where I haven’t behaved according to them").

That Leiter despite these facts wrote so viciously makes his behaviour even more appalling.

"For some reason, most of the victims of his behaviour are women"

I do not see evidence for that. Leiter has used combative and personal language in response to any number of people on his blogs over the years. See for example his negative words against Thomas Nagel.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6763377479629539589.post-59383772157903818092014-09-25T16:06:06.746+02:002014-09-25T16:06:06.746+02:00Please note that the "statement" web sit...Please note that the "statement" web site has now been restored.
